Mexicaanse griep zal miljoenen levens kosten
WHO voorspelt enkele miljoenen doden
De wereldgezondheidsorganisatie berekende op basis van de huidige cijfers dat er dit jaar enkele miljoenen mensen zullen overlijden aan de griep.
Men vergelijkt de griep met de aziatische griep van 1957 die een pandemie veroorzaakte waarbij bijna 2 miljoen mensen overleden. Dit is gelukkig slechts een ‘milde’ pandemie, de Spaanse griep kende ernstigere gevolgen. Het is volgens de onderzoekers van het WHO slechts een kwestie van tijd voordat de uitbraak globaal wordt.
Ondertussen raakten meer dan 6500 personen besmet met het virus in 33 landen. Men verwacht dat het aantal besmettingen vooral de komende herfst exponentieel zal stijgen.
